Collaborative design
Kingston University developed the designs for Middle Mill in partnership with the local community through an ongoing consultation process – which ran from November 2024 to September 2025. The final proposals reflect the valuable input provided by residents, local community groups, technical consultees, staff and students who gave us their feedback.
Our approach
Throughout the design process, we sought to engage proactively with community feedback and conversations with the planning authority to inform our proposals. Information on the emerging proposals and consultation events was made available online and updated as the process progressed.

How your feedback shaped our proposals
The final design proposals reflect valuable input from everyone who participated in our consultation process. Based on the feedback received, we made the following changes:
- The building’s internal configuration has been developed based on feedback supplied by our staff and student communities
- The overall building design has progressed following community feedback ensuring that it responds positively to its local context and Kingston’s architectural character, including revised colour and material palette and a repositioning slightly to the north
- We have worked extensively to refine the building’s shape and size to ensure that impacts on neighbouring properties are mitigated as far as possible
- We have worked with the Design Review Panel (DRP) to ensure that our public realm strategy is sustainable and our building design responds positively to the local context
- The building’s comprehensive flood mitigation strategy has evolved based on extensive discussions with the Environment Agency.
